A venue viewing is not just about how a room looks. These are the questions that separate the right venue from a beautiful one.
Walking around a beautiful wedding venue is easy. It looks wonderful. The rooms photograph well and the coordinator is charming. The harder work is making sure the venue can actually deliver the wedding you have in mind — at the scale, in the style and with the support you need.
A good tour takes about an hour. Bring a list of questions. Not because you should interrogate the venue, but because the right questions will tell you quickly whether this is a place that knows what it is doing.
Questions about the space itself
Can we see the ceremony space and the reception space together? The flow between them matters almost as much as the rooms themselves.
What is the capacity in each configuration? Seated dinner is different from a standing drinks reception. Ask for both numbers.
Are there other events happening on or near our date? Exclusive-use venues will say no. Non-exclusive venues should be honest about what is planned and how it is managed.
Can we access the grounds? Outdoor spaces, kitchen gardens and parking areas are part of the venue experience — ask to see all of them.
Questions about the food
Who runs the kitchen — in-house or external? How long have they have been there? Continuity in a kitchen team matters more than most couples realise.
Can we see a sample menu, or is the menu bespoke to each wedding?
How are dietary requirements handled and when does the information need to be confirmed?
When does the menu tasting happen and is it included in the package price?
Questions about coordination
Who is our coordinator, and will they be present on the day itself? Some venues use a dedicated planning coordinator and a separate on-the-day team.
How many other weddings are running on that same day, or the same weekend?
How do you prefer to communicate during the planning period — email, phone, meetings?
Can you put us in touch with a couple who has celebrated here recently?
Questions about flexibility
What can we bring in ourselves — own suppliers, specific decorations, a wedding cake?
What time can we access the venue for setup on the day?
What time does the evening formally finish, and is there any flexibility on that?
What happens if our guest numbers change after we have booked?
What to notice rather than ask
Some things reveal themselves without questions. Is the coordinator actually listening to you, or reciting a script? Does the space feel maintained and genuinely cared for? Are the people showing you around the ones you will be working with, or are you being handled by a sales team?
The answer to "is this the right venue for us?" rarely comes from a list. It comes from whether you leave feeling that the people here understand the kind of wedding you want to have — and whether you believe they can deliver it.
